If you are planning a home office, a loft conversion or just better Wi-Fi upstairs, someone has probably told you to run Cat 6 through the loft. Sometimes that is exactly right, and sometimes it is money spent on cable you will never use. Here is how we help homeowners around Ilkeston and the wider Derbyshire area decide.
The loft is often the easiest route for cabling in a typical two storey house. Rather than chasing walls or lifting floorboards, an installer can drop cables down from the loft into upstairs rooms, which keeps disruption and cost down. If you want wired internet in a bedroom used as an office, a wireless access point on the landing ceiling, or CCTV cameras on the eaves, running the cable through the loft is usually the sensible path.

Drilling down through the ceiling into stud walls needs care around joists, pipes and existing electrics. A tidy installation also means every run is tested with a proper cable tester and labelled at both ends, so faults can be traced years later.
A straightforward job, such as one or two Cat 6 runs from a router downstairs, up through the loft and into an upstairs room, is usually done in half a day. Longer jobs with multiple rooms, a small network cabinet or ceiling access points can take a day or more. Cost depends on cable length, how accessible the loft is, wall construction and how many terminated sockets you want, so treat any figure as a guide rather than a promise.
As a rough range, single domestic runs often land somewhere in the low hundreds of pounds including testing and tidy finishing, while whole-home jobs scale with the number of points. You can, and plenty of confident DIYers do, but termination and testing are where self-installs usually fall down.
