Wi-Fi in Sheffield's stone-built terraces and steel-framed offices can be frustratingly patchy, and a wired network is still the most reliable fix. Cat6a is the cable most installers now recommend for new jobs, but it is not always the right answer for every property or budget. Here is what it actually delivers, what it tends to cost, and the questions worth asking before anyone starts drilling.
Cat6a supports 10 gigabit speeds over a full 100 metre run, whereas standard Cat6 only manages 10Gb over roughly 55 metres and drops to 1Gb beyond that. For a typical three-bed semi in Hillsborough or Ecclesall the runs are usually well under 40 metres, so plain Cat6 would technically cope. The case for Cat6a is future-proofing: full-fibre providers in Sheffield already sell residential packages above 1Gb, and once the cable is buried in your walls, replacing it later costs far more than the difference in materials today.
Cat6a is also better shielded against interference, which matters if cables have to share routes with mains wiring, as they often do in older Sheffield housing stock where there is only one sensible path through the building. The trade-off is that the cable is thicker and stiffer, so it needs slightly larger holes and gentler bends, which can make retrofits a bit more disruptive.
A retrofit usually means running cable from a central point, often under the stairs or in a loft or garage where your router and a small patch panel live, out to wall sockets in each room. In pre-war terraces around Walkley, Crookes or Heeley, solid stone and brick walls mean surface trunking, chasing, or routing through floor voids and lofts rather than simply dropping cables inside stud walls. A good installer will walk the property first and tell you honestly which rooms are easy and which will be awkward.
Every finished point should be tested and certified with a proper cable tester, not just checked that it lights up. Ask for test results in writing. A run that passes certification will support the speeds it is rated for; one that has been kinked, stretched or terminated badly may negotiate at a fraction of that, and you would never know without the test.
For a domestic retrofit, most homeowners in the Sheffield area can expect somewhere in the region of £80 to £150 per point installed and tested, with small jobs of two or three points sitting at the higher end per point because of setup time. A whole-house job of eight to twelve points typically lands between £700 and £1,500 depending on access. These are guide figures, not quotes; loft access, wall construction, cable route length and whether you want a tidy patch panel all move the number.
Be wary of quotes that are dramatically cheaper. The usual corners cut are copper-clad aluminium cable, which is not genuine Cat6a and fails under load, unterminated testing, and messy runs stapled tight against mains cables. Genuine solid-copper Cat6a, proper containment and certified testing cost a little more and are worth every penny over a 20 year lifespan.
Honest answer: if your runs are short, your broadband is under 1Gb and your budget is tight, Cat6 will serve most homes well for years. Cat6a earns its keep if you are renovating anyway and the walls are open, if you run a home office moving large files to a NAS, or if you want the install to outlast two or three broadband upgrades. Since labour is the biggest share of the cost, and the labour is identical for both, most installers, ourselves included, suggest paying the modest material uplift for Cat6a on new work.

For basic browsing and streaming, yes, Cat6 would cope. But because labour makes up most of the cost, the small extra spend on Cat6a materials buys you 10Gb capability that will comfortably outlast several broadband upgrades, so it is usually worth it on new installations.
Expect some drilling and lifting of floorboards or loft boards, though a careful installer will use existing voids and discreet trunking wherever possible. Most domestic jobs of six to ten points are completed in one to two days with minimal making good.
Both help, but neither matches a wired connection for speed or stability, and powerline performance in older properties with ageing mains wiring is often poor. A common middle ground is running Cat6a to one or two ceiling-mounted access points, giving you strong Wi-Fi everywhere without cabling every room.
